Langtang Region
Langtang is the closest Himalayan trekking region to Kathmandu, reachable in a single day's drive, which makes it the natural choice for trekkers who want real high mountains without spending days in transit or booking a mountain flight. The main route follows the Langtang Khola up a narrowing valley, climbing through oak and rhododendron forest into yak pasture and finally to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m), a small settlement beneath Langtang Lirung. Most trekkers spend an extra day here to climb Tserko Ri (4,984m) for a panorama across the Langtang range and, on clear mornings, into Tibet. The neighbouring Tamang Heritage Trail offers a gentler, lower-altitude alternative through Tamang villages with strong Tibetan roots, hot springs and views of Ganesh Himal. The valley was devastated by a landslide triggered by the 2015 earthquake, which destroyed Langtang village. The community has rebuilt, and trekking here now directly supports that recovery, something many visitors consider part of the reason to come. The area sits inside Langtang National Park, the first Himalayan national park in Nepal, home to red panda, Himalayan black bear and more than 250 bird species. Trails are quieter than Everest or Annapurna throughout the year.
