Annapurna Region
The Annapurna region is the most varied trekking area in Nepal, and for many visitors the most rewarding. It takes its name from Annapurna I (8,091m), the first eight-thousander ever climbed, summited by a French expedition in 1950. Most trips start from Pokhara, which makes the region far easier to reach than the Everest valleys. The choices here suit almost everyone. The Annapurna Circuit loops around the entire massif and crosses Thorong La (5,416m), passing from green middle hills into the arid, Tibetan-influenced landscapes of Manang. The Annapurna Base Camp trek climbs into a natural amphitheatre ringed by peaks at 4,130m. Shorter routes to Poon Hill (3,210m) and Ghandruk deliver sunrise over Annapurna and Dhaulagiri in under a week, and are among the best introductions to Himalayan trekking anywhere. Tilicho Lake at 4,919m, one of the highest lakes in the world, makes a demanding side trip off the Circuit. The whole area lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal's largest protected region, which spans everything from rhododendron and bamboo forest to high desert. Gurung and Magar villages line the lower trails, giving way to Thakali and Tibetan Buddhist communities further north.
