Everest Region
The Everest region, known in Nepali as the Khumbu, is the most famous trekking destination on earth and home to Mount Everest (8,848m), called Sagarmatha in Nepal and Chomolungma in Tibet. Almost every journey here begins with the short mountain flight into Lukla, followed by a walk up the Dudh Koshi valley to Namche Bazaar (3,440m), the Sherpa trading town that serves as the gateway and main acclimatisation stop for the whole region. Beyond Namche the trails fan out. The classic route continues past Tengboche monastery to Everest Base Camp (5,364m) and the sunrise viewpoint of Kala Patthar (5,545m). Quieter alternatives lead west to the turquoise Gokyo Lakes and the panorama from Gokyo Ri, or link the two valleys over the icy Cho La pass. Strong trekkers with time to spare can attempt the Three Passes circuit, crossing Renjo La, Cho La and Kongma La in a single loop. All of it sits inside Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting glaciers, blue pine and rhododendron forest, Himalayan tahr and the occasional snow leopard. What stays with most trekkers, though, is the Sherpa culture: mani walls, spinning prayer wheels, and teahouses run by families who have lived beneath these peaks for five centuries.
